Book selection: The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.
The Song of Achilles is a lyrical retelling of Homer’s The Iliad told from the perspective of Patroclus, an awkward, exiled young prince who finds a home in Phthia under the protection of the kingdom’s golden prince, Achilles. As the two grow from close childhood companions into deeply devoted romantic partners, their peaceful lives are disrupted by the onset of the Trojan War, which calls Achilles to fulfill his destiny as the greatest warrior of his generation. Despite the disapproval of Achilles’s immortal mother, the sea-goddess Thetis, Patroclus follows him to the bloody siege of Troy, where the couple must navigate a decade of brutal warfare, prideful kings, and a tragic, inescapable prophecy that tests the boundaries of their love and fate.
