Yeah\, the coffee is hot and reasonably potent (I’m lookin’ at you\, Denny’s!) and we get a semi-private (well\, sort of) back room. But the real charm of the place is when our favorite waitress snarls at us\, “Hey old men – are you ready to order?!” You cannot put a price on that. \nClearly we really like this eatery as evidenced by the fact we all tend to hang around way past 1:30. We have a large crowd of PTKC’ers every Friday so it’s worth the jaunt. Parking can be a little tight but you’ll find a space – not to worry. Two\, count ’em\, TWO movies will be shown simultaneously in their spacious residence and you can choose which one appeals to you. Now one movie is “ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE.” Based on a best-selling novel\, two Latino teenage boys living in 1987 El Paso have a chance meeting at a local swimming pool that develops into a meaningful and loving relationship. This 2024 film has a “Fresh Tomatoes” 88%/95% positive critic/audience rating and a 7.1 rating on IMDB. Your fellow PTKC’ers\, Jim K. and Larry H.\, recommended this film and we thank them for the suggestion! The other feature is our “Mystery Offering.” Why is is a mystery? This is what happens when certain people don’t tell me what it is!  But\, as soon as I know\, you’ll see it posted right here. \nOur hosts graciously provide popcorn and few nibbles\, water and ice tea so BYOB if you’re so inclined. There are plenty of other\, more reasonable and equally delicious options available. Now if you really want that dish (I do!) just call it Chateaubriand\, take a deep breath and order it. While many of us are retired\, several are still working guys and starting in June\, we’re scheduling our Wednesday night dining escapades to start at 7:00 PM. My maternal grandfather used to tell me that civilized people don’t dine before 8:00 PM. Prior to meeting him for an evening repast\, I would sneak a couple of PB&J sandwiches. But back to Meddys. This restaurant has been around since 2014 and has garnered a large following! It’s authentic\, healthy Mediterranean fare at reasonable prices. Portion sizes are generous and there’s a wide selection of signature cocktails. There’s even vegan and gluten-free options. Nice\, huh? \nSo\, let’s meet at Meddys for a meal! DESCRIPTION:Man\, is this a study in contrasts or what? Last week\, we dined at Grand Street Cafe and tonight we’re imbibing and dining at Corner Cafe in Riverside! Casual\, comfortable and operating since 1983. Now interestingly enough\, there had always been a small restaurant at the “Corner” in Riverside\, Missouri\, but before 1983 it had changed names and hands several times. Many of the locals wanted to see a return to the old-style cafe that had existed there. Enter Ed and Kathi Rule. They had never been in the restaurant business before\, but always felt they knew what good food was all about and their following grew into loyal customers. It’s American comfort food at its best. Burgers\, sandwiches\, salads\, grilled tenderloin – there’s something there for everyone at reasonable prices. DESCRIPTION:So\, before we chat about bridge\, did you know that contract bridge has its origins in the 16th Century? And\, about 15 million Americans age 45 and over know how to play and about 5 million of them play at least a few times a year. Kinda’ nifty\, huh? Now my exposure to this game started when I was a mere lad. My folks loved the game and attempted to teach me to play. Unfortunately I was more eager to continue my clandestine assignation with GI Joe and Ken (stolen from my sister) who were carrying on a torrid affair unbeknownst to poor Barbie (also stolen from my sister).  But enough about that. Back to bridge. PTKC has a monthly bridge group on the second Thursday of each month.  Games are held at Jim Wright’s home and\, even better\, all skill levels are welcome to join in. DESCRIPTION:A sad\, very sad riff on the opening song from the musical\, “Oklahoma.” Yeah\, I had a serious crush on Gordon MacGrae who played Curly in the movie version.\n“We’re watchin’ two movies in Leawood. We’re watchin’ two movies in Leawood. There’s popcorn a-plenty and much to imbibe…..just don’t let Jim’s snoring disturb this great vibe!” (We love ‘ya\, Jim! )\nIt’s the much beloved Two-Fer Movie Night at Sam and Jim’s in Leawood!  Two movies will be shown simultaneously in their spacious residence and you can choose which one appeals to you. Now showing downstairs is the movie Great Freedom. This 2021 drama film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and other international awards. It takes place in post-war Germany. A gay man\, Hans\, played by actor Franz Rogowski is jailed for his homosexuality and is repeatedly imprisoned for his “crimes.”  As Hans returns to prison he develops an unlikely bond with his cellmate Viktor\, a convicted murderer.  What begins as revulsion by Viktor blossoms over time into something more tender.  This film is not rated but contains graphic male nudity\, strong sexual content\, graphic drug use and suicide. The film has a 7.5 IMDB rating and has a high score of 97%/91% critic/audience rating with Fresh Tomatoes! The film is in German with English subtitles. Our collective thanks to Jim Kogel and Larry Harmon for this fine recommendation.\nNow for the upstairs flick\, well\, you’ll have to wait a bit until someone tells me what it is.
