DESCRIPTION:So\, before we chat about bridge\, did you know that contract bridge has its origins in the 16th Century? And\, about 15 million Americans age 45 and over know how to play and about 5 million of them play at least a few times a year. Kinda’ nifty\, huh? Now my exposure to this game started when I was a mere lad. My folks loved the game and attempted to teach me to play. Unfortunately I was more eager to continue my clandestine assignation with GI Joe and Ken (stolen from my sister) who were carrying on a torrid affair unbeknownst to poor Barbie (also stolen from my sister).  But enough about that. Back to bridge. PTKC has a monthly bridge group on the second Thursday of each month.  Games are held at Jim Wright’s home and\, even better\, all skill levels are welcome to join in. But the real charm of the place is when our favorite waitress snarls at us\, “Hey old men – are you ready to order?!” You cannot put a price on that. \nClearly we really like this eatery as evidenced by the fact we all tend to hang around way past 1:30. We have a large crowd of PTKC’ers every Friday so it’s worth the jaunt. Parking can be a little tight but you’ll find a space – not to worry. DESCRIPTION:Now this should be fun! We’re booking a one hour tour of the famous J. Rieger Distillery in the West Bottoms followed by dinner at Knuckleheads. Founded in 1887 by Jacob Rieger\, it is still managed by a great-great-great grandson and Andy Rieger is the youthful CEO. In 2014\, Rieger quit his job in Dallas and moved back to Kansas City\, took a leap of faith and spent $20 million on resurrecting the distillery.  I don’t know about you\, but for a young guy\, that’s damn impressive! After the tour (for those who can still stand upright) we’re hoofing it across the street to Knuckleheads for dinner.\nWe are doing the one hour private Heritage Tour at 5 PM. It includes a tasting of their four core spirits. We’ve purchased 18 spaces and we ask you gents to pay us before the tour. The per person amount is $30.00. You guys know the drill; cash or checks are fine. Plastic? Just get in touch with our esteemed Treasurer\, Doug Pittack. Just please remember that if you buy a ticket and are unable to attend\, we are cannot refund the amount. Oh\, last thing. J. Does that mean that a collective bunch of PTKC men can’t have a great time there? Not at all!\nLocated in the heart of the historic Englewood Arts District in Independence\, “Vivilore” comes from Latin; viva means life and lore means story — life story. The menu is beautifully crafted and very sophisticated. Take a moment and peruse their cuisine. Now be warned\, no prices are listed. This place is not inexpensive. But every now and then we should indulge ourselves just a bit. Vivilore is the place to do that and exploring our own\, unique “life stories” together is what makes Prime Timers so special. You’ll just sacrifice next month’s mortgage payment in doing so.\nOh\, c’mon! I was gettin’ entirely too sappy and some wry sarcasm was called for! Guys\, just join us!\n

Yeah\, the coffee is hot and reasonably potent (I’m lookin’ at you\, Denny’s!) and we get a semi-private (well\, sort of) back room. But the real charm of the place is when our favorite waitress snarls at us\, “Hey old men – are you ready to order?!” You cannot put a price on that. \nClearly we really like this eatery as evidenced by the fact we all tend to hang around way past 1:30. We have a large crowd of PTKC’ers every Friday so it’s worth the jaunt. Parking can be a little tight but you’ll find a space – not to worry. DESCRIPTION:It’s the much beloved Two-Fer Movie Night at Sam and Jim’s in Leawood! Two movies will be shown simultaneously in their spacious residence and you can choose which one appeals to you. The upstairs flick is Death Becomes Her. Now this 1992 movie is a much beloved film. It’s a black comedy fantasy film directed and produced by Robert Zemeckis and starring Meryl Streep\, Goldie Hawn\, Bruce Willis\, and Isabella Rossellini. Its plot follows two women who drink a magic potion that promises eternal youth with surprising consequences. I mean\, c’mon! What a cast! If you haven’t seen it I promise you’re gonna love it.\nNow showing downstairs is Unicorns. Unicorns is a drama directed by James Krishna Floyd and Sally El Hosaini\, released in 2024. The film stars Ben Hardy as Luke\, a single father and mechanic who is forced to question his sexual identity when he unexpectedly falls in love with Aysha (Jason Patel)\, a drag queen. The film premiered in the Special Presentations program at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival to great fanfare. It was just released in the US this month.\nOur hosts graciously provide popcorn\, a few nibbles\, water and ice tea so BYOB if you’re so inclined. DESCRIPTION:So\, a little trivia here. Did you know that William B. Strang Jr. was an American railroad magnate who platted Overland Park and is considered the founder of the community? In 1905\, Strang purchased 600 acres south of Kansas City and adjacent to present day Metcalf Avenue and 80th Street. Fast forward 120 years and that brings us to Strang Hall. Today it’s a collective of five chef-driven eateries under one roof. Check out the video to get a sense of this fine establishment.
