SUMMARY:1:15 PM - Saturday - Book Club
DESCRIPTION:What: Henry Henry\nBy: Allen Bratten\nWhere: Quatrefoil Library\nWhen: Oct 19 at 1:15 PM \nContact Rick for details or to subscribe to book club notices by email here. \nBook Review: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHenry Henry is a queer reimagining of Shakespeare’s Henriad\, transposing the legend of Henry V’s wayward youth into 21st-century Britain in the years leading up to the Brexit referendum. \nHenry Henry follows Hal Lancaster—22\, gay\, Catholic—as he spends his first years out of Oxford \n\n\n\n\nfloating between internships\, drinking with his actor friends\, struggling through awkward hook-ups\, and occasionally going to confession to be absolved of his sins.

SUMMARY:1:15 PM - Saturday - Book Club
DESCRIPTION:What: Day\nBy: Michael Cunningham\nWhere: Quatrefoil Library\nWhen: Sept. 21 at 1:15 PM \nContact Rick for details or to subscribe to book club notices by email here. \nBook Review: \n\n\n\nMichael Cunningham’s new novel\, “Day\,” visits a family on April 5 in 2019\, 2020 and 2021 — before\, during and after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic\, which shadows the book although the words “Covid” and “pandemic” never appear. \nAt the core of the family’s dynamic is a love triangle\, more or less platonic. Isabel\, a photo editor with a “pugilistic jaw\,” feels bad about having lost her erotic connection to her husband\, Dan\, a former rock ’n’ roller who has now grown “stocky and slightly\, voluptuously soft\,” but is fantasizing about a comeback. Both she and Dan consider her gay brother\, Robbie\, a sixth-grade teacher who lives alone in the attic of their brownstone\, to be their closest friend.

DESCRIPTION:What: Fellow Travelers\nBy: Thomas Mallon\nWhere: Quatrefoil Library\nWhen: March 23rd at 1:15 PM \nContact Rick for details or to subscribe to book club notices by email here. \nBook Review: \n\n\n\n\nMallon establishes a clear link between the “red menace” and what’s been called “the lavender scare\,” seeing both purges as part of the same web of suspicion. At the time\, some people made that connection too\, yet the novel’s main characters don’t. Their sexual identities are an entirely private matter\, something removed from politics.

DESCRIPTION:What: Hide\nBy: Matthew Griffen\nWhere: Quatrefoil Library\nWhen: Feb. 17 at 1:15 PM \nContact Rick for details or to subscribe to book club notices by email here. \nBook Review: \n\n\n\n\nIt’s a quiet winter day in the shop when Wendell first sees Frank\, a young World War II vet returned to their Southern town. The wary love that develops between them is forbidden in this time and place\, but by cutting ties with the outside world\, they make a \n\n\n\n\nhome for themselves on the far edge of town. Wendell cooks\, Frank tends the garden and tries to keep the dog from digging it up. But when old age sets in and Frank’s strength and memory start to deteriorate\, the two of them must confront the sacrifices they’ve made—the lives they never had and the one they’ll fight to keep.

SUMMARY:1:15 PM - Saturday - Book Club
DESCRIPTION:What: The Magician\nBy: Colm Toibin\nWhere: Quatrefoil Library\nWhen: Oct. 21st at 1:15 PM \nContact Rick for details or to subscribe to book club notices by email here. \nBook Review: \n\n\n\nGermany’s greatest 20th century writer\, Thomas Mann\, is the subject of Colm Tóibín’s novel. \nGay\, artistic Thomas Mann is born into a prosperous mercantile family in Lübeck\, a provincial German port on the Baltic Sea. In Thomas’s surroundings\, money is as self-evident and essential as water and sunshine. When\, a few decades later\, the post-war inflation evaporates the family fortune\, his mother does what other self- respecting women of her class would do – take to bed and starve herself to death – because she simply doesn’t know how to live otherwise.

DESCRIPTION:What: Ike’s Master Man: The Secret Lives of Robert Cutler\nBy: Peter Shinkle\nWhere: Quatrefoil Library\nWhen: Sept. 16th at 1:15 PM \nContact Rick for details or to subscribe to book club notices by email here. \nBook Review: \n\n\n\nWhat do you do if you’re gay\, closeted\, and a vital part of a homophobic president’s inner circle? Journalist Peter Shinkle seeks to answer this question with his book Ike’s Mystery Man: The Secret Lives of Robert Cutler. Shinkle spent twelve years pulling together a book on his great-uncle Robert “Bobby” Cutler’s. Using Cutler’s personal diary as a pivotal reference\, a dairy which described his obsessive love affair with another man\, Ike’s Mystery Man digs deep into US post-World War II history and how our government dealt with the LGBTQ community at that time.

Smart and compulsively readable\, Laskey has woven together narratives that seek to embrace each other through the hurt. There is love and loss alike sandwiched in its pages\, pain and pleasure.

DESCRIPTION:What: Punch Me Up to the Gods: A Memoir\nBy: Brian Broom\nWhere: Quatrefoil Library\nWhen: June 18th at 1:15 PM \nContact Rick for details or to subscribe to book club notices by email here. \n\n\n\n“Punch Me Up to the Gods” is a coming-of-age story that explores Black manhood and queerness in the Rust Belt. The title of the book is a reference to the ways that Black boys are often socialized into rigid conceptions of manhood — sometimes by the use of violence. “Any Black boy who did not signify how manly he was at all times deserved to\nbe punched back up to God to be remade\, reshaped\,” Broome writes. With this book\,\nBroome hopes to counter the force of that punch by exploring the beauty of queer Black manhood\, while offering a new way to write about that beauty.
