World AIDS Day

December 1, 2019

In 1987, North Carolina Sen. Jessie Helm, said, “Somewhere along the line we’re going to have to quarantine people
with AIDS.” That wasthe hate and the ignorance that we faced at the time. Sen. Jessie Helms opposed increased funding for AIDS research and even fought reauthorization for the Ryan White Act in 1995.

Can you imagine the tens of thousands of AIDS people who have died needlessly from the inaction on part of our government due to people like Helms? Can you imagine the force and the gains that we could have made had our generation not have been so decimated by this insidious disease? Can you imagine what life would have been like if it wasn’t for the loss of so many of our lovers, family, friends and acquaintances? For this and others is the reason that we remember on World AIDS Day.

Positive Directions has a few events. An all day book fair from 9 AM – 9 PM at Barnes & Noble, 1920 N. Rock Road. At the same time and at the same location there is World AIDS Day: Let’s Talk About It.

And from 12 Noon to 5 PM you can buy beer at Hopping Gnome, 1710 E. Douglas, for $10 per pint and keep the glass, 50% of sales benefit Positive Directions.
