PPT Cares Fund

Socialization is good for anyone at any age, but as we grow older, human interactions become even more important. Older adults are at an increased risk for loneliness and social isolation. Studies have shown that social relationships can help us live longer, healthier lives.

Pittsburgh PrimeTimers’ Board, its newly formed Events Committee, and other dedicated member volunteers work to arrange diverse and interesting events for members to take part in, whether dining out, taking a day trip, touring a museum, or joining in some invigorating exercise. While every effort is made during the planning stages to consider the price of these activities, sometimes they’re just not affordable to everyone.

We are happy to announce the establishment of a free activities fund for PPT members. Called the PPT Cares Fund, it steps in to pay the way when a member cannot. Underwritten by individual members, the Fund is completely confidential. An administrator, appointed by the Board, handles the nominal application and, with the Treasurer, discreetly arranges for the disbursement. There are no prying questions and no need to “prove” anything – your word is good enough for us. Think of it as a scholarship without the scholar part.

To contribute to the Fund, a member may sponsor the admission charge/entry fee/ticket price for a particular event. For each event, a notice will be included indicating how many PPT Cares “passes” are available. For instance, six museum admissions may be offered, or two breakfasts, or one train trip. If you’re in a position to underwrite an admission or a meal, we’d be grateful. Donors will be acknowledged but may remain anonymous if they prefer.

We hope to grow the Fund as word spreads and prospective donors join in. In the meantime, though, we are limiting members to two PPT Cares Fund passes per 12-month period. Participation is limited to paid members, but you are welcome to request that the Fund pay your membership dues too!

Do you remember when the Affordable Care Act was first introduced? Opponents called it “Obamacare”, meant as a pejorative. When a reporter confronted the President about this offensive new term, he was far from irked. He endorsed the nickname, saying, "I have no problem with people saying Obama cares. I do care." And so, if you’re wondering why this new Fund is called PPT Cares, it’s because we do care!
